Onto the second half of 2006 in my random-six-month-Billboard-Charts-listening-project!
"Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae enters this week in history. It's a song I've heard a million times but I have no idea if it cracked the top 10 back in 2006. (No spoilers, please!) I'll keep my ear on it. Coincidentally there's a cover on the current 2021 Billboard chart by Ritt Momney (spoonerism for Mitt Romney) . It's ... slow and distorted and weird.
The American Idol franchise has a big impact on the charts. Season five finished in May 2006 with Taylor Hicks winning and Katherine McPhee coming in second. Hicks has one (forgettable) song this week, and McPhee has two. Other former contestants on the chart include superstars Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood (who both coincidentally have Christmas songs on this week's charts in 2021).
Only one act has three songs on the charts this week in 2006: Rascal Flatts. Two of these songs became top 10 hits for them: "What Hurts the Most" and "Life is a Highway, a cover of the early 90's top 10 hit by Tom Cochrane. My husband is still a huge Rascal Flatts fan and the rare crossover country act to do well on pop radio. I find them overly syrupy but enjoy "Life is a Highway" and could happily hear it many times.
